The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has revoked, with immediate effect, the accreditation granted to Binwell Mpundu to access the National Results Centre, citing concerns over public safety and security during the electoral process.
According to the Commission, the decision follows the circulation of a video on social media attributed to Mr. Mpundu.
The ECZ said the video allegedly contains statements in which Mpundu indicated that he was prepared to kill during the election.
The Commission said it considers statements of this nature a serious concern because they have the potential to incite violence, create public unrest and undermine the peaceful conduct of the electoral process.
The Electoral Commission said the revocation of Mpundu’s accreditation was made pursuant to Section 77(6) of the Electoral Process Act and Paragraph 11(1)(c) of the Electoral Code of Conduct.
The decision means that Mpundu will no longer have access to the National Results Centre under the accreditation that had previously been granted to him.
The National Results Centre is an important facility during elections where electoral processes and results management activities are conducted.
The ECZ said statements that could be interpreted as threats of violence are particularly concerning during an election period, warning that such statements could contribute to electoral violence, public unrest and disruption of the peaceful environment required for citizens to participate in the democratic process.
The decision comes as Zambia prepares for the August 13, 2026 General Elections, with political parties, candidates and voters expected to participate in the electoral process peacefully and in accordance with the law.
Accreditation allows authorised individuals and representatives to access designated election facilities and participate in activities for which they have been approved. By revoking Mpundu’s accreditation, the ECZ has withdrawn his permission to access the National Results Centre.
The Commission said the action was taken in the interest of public safety and security.
The latest decision highlights the importance of responsible conduct by political players, election stakeholders and members of the public during the electoral period.
The ECZ has continued to emphasise the need for participants to respect electoral laws and the Code of Conduct while avoiding actions or statements that could threaten peace and public order.
With the country heading to the polls, authorities are expected to closely monitor conduct that could contribute to tension or violence.
The ECZ said its decision regarding Mpundu was made in response to concerns raised by the video circulating on social media.
The Commission’s action underscores the importance of maintaining peace, security and public confidence throughout Zambia’s electoral process.
