A father and his son will spend the rest of their days behind bars after being sentenced to life imprisonment with hard labour for killing a 20-year-old mobile money booth attendant in Chipata after robbing him of cash and two mobile phone all valued at K30,000.

Chipata High Court Judge in-charge Mercy Makubalo found Charles Phiri, 54, and his son Joseph, 27, guilty for killing Emmanuel Nyirenda, 20, whom they abducted before withdrawing over K28,000 from his mobile account.

Emmanuel Nyirenda was working as mobile money booth attendant and was abducted from his workplace near High Way Bakery before being killed.

After abducting him the duo grabbed his mobile phones and went to transact outside Zanaco Bank using the same agent number Emmanuel Nyirenda was using on the material day.

They were only arrested after a Police officer Katongo Mulenga who was investigating the case obtained CCTV footage from Zanaco Chipata branch showing the Joseph transacting at a booth outside the bank using the mobile money agent number which Nyirenda was using at work.

During trial, Mulenga told the court that Joseph confessed after being apprehended that Emmanuel was killed in a car between Katete-Chipata on the Great East Road.

Joseph also informed officers that he was with his father while committing the offence.
