Four die in an RTA while driver in hospital after receiving punche£s.

Four people have died in a fatal road traffic accident which occurred yesterday around 14:50 hours, opposite Kachila Village, in Chiswa area, along the Great East Road.

Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga says the accident happened when the driver, due to excessive speed, lost control of his Motor Vehicle Volvo Truck and trailer, veered off the road and hit the four Pedestrians who were seated and doing their normal business, and further hit into a tree in a nearby bush where the Motor Vehicle rested.

Mr. Hamoonga says Matilda Thole aged 37 of Kachila Village sustained Fatal head injuries and died on the spot while Mwatitha Daka, 30 of Nkholowondo village and Josephine Banda of unknown age, of Kachila Village all of Senior Chief Nzamane’s area were pronounced dead upon arrival at St. Francis Mission Hospital in Katete.

And Petronella Mbewe aged 1 year 4 months, daughter to the deceased Mwatitha Daka sustained suspected internal injuries and was admitted to St Francis Mission Hospital Intensive Care Unit and has since succumbed to injuries.

Meanwhile, Mr. Hamoonga has told Breeze FM News that the driver who escaped unhurt was beaten by a Mob at the accident scene and is admitted to St. Francis Mission Hospital for observation.

He said once the driver Alex Chirwa aged 29 of Navutika compound in Chipata is discharged from Hospital, he will be charged with four Counts of Causing Death by Dangerous Driving.
