As Zambia joins the rest of the World to commemorate the International Day for People with Disabilities today, Government has pledged to continue promoting socio-economic inclusivity among people with disabilities.
The theme for this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities is – United in action to rescue and achieve the SDGs for, with and by persons with disabilities.
Minister of Community Development and Social Services, Ms. Doreen Mwamba has acknowledged the important role people with disabilities play in fostering national development in various sectors of society.
She says Government highly values the immeasurable contribution people with disabilities have rendered to the nation, and will therefore ensure their interests are prioritized.
She said today is a reminder to all stakeholders on the need to be accommodative and ensure that people with disabilities are incorporated into all aspects of national, development devoid of discrimination and all forms of inequalities.
“As we mark the International Day for People with Disabilities,government’s commitment through the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services, to inclusivity and accessibility remains unwavering”, Ms. Mwamba said.
She said the strength of our society lies in embracing the diverse abilities of every individual, hence the collective need to continue working towards removing barriers, promoting equal opportunities, and ensuring that the rights and dignity of people with disabilities are upheld in every facet of life.
She further said building a future where inclusion is not just a goal, but a lived reality for all is possible through stakeholder collaboration and participation, coupled with the prevailing political will.
Ms. Mwamba has therefore called for unity in diversity through recognition of abilities and valuable contributions of individuals with disabilities by breaking down barriers in order to strive for a world that respects, supports, and empowers every person, while fostering a society where everyone can thrive.
