Government has honoured and acknowledged volunteers, for the selfless role they play in the country’s socio-economic development.

Speaking yesterday in Chifunabuli district in Luapula Province, during this year’s commemoration of the International Volunteers Day, Minister of Community Development and Social Services, Ms. Doreen Mwamba, in a speech read on her behalf by Permanent Secretary,Ms. Angela Kawandami, said Government is cognisant of the immeasurable support by volunteers across the country in various sectors, and will endeavour to support them in every way possible.

Over 1000 volunteers marched, with others receiving outstanding certificates during the event, which was commemorated under the theme:” If Everyone Did, Volunteering for a Better Zambia”.

Ms. Mwamba further said Government values the support volunteers render in areas of health, water and sanitation among others, to supplement efforts to improve the welfare of citizens

And United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) country representative, Mr. James Wakiaga, hailed volunteers for the sacrifices they put in, especially in challenging times that require immediate response and collaboration.

Mr Wakiaga outlined the importance of volunteering which has facilitated for volunteers to self-organize and form connections with each other,while setting their own development priorities through ownership of local challenges.

Meanwhile, Director for Community Development, who is also Zambia Volunteer Committee Chairperson,Ms.Patricia Muyamwa, encouraged volunteers to remain committed to making communities better places to live in.

And a volunteer, Anne Mwape, thanked Government and other stakeholders for recognizing and valuing the contribution of volunteers in national development.
