President-elect Hakainde Hichilema is set to be sworn in as President of Zambia on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, following the expiry of the constitutional period for filing a petition challenging the presidential election results.
Secretary to the Cabinet Patrick Kangwa has confirmed that the presidential inauguration of Hakainde Hichilema will proceed after the seven-day period allowed for challenging the presidential election elapsed without the Judiciary receiving any petition.
Mr Kangwa said the swearing-in ceremony will be conducted in accordance with Article 105 of the Constitution of Zambia Act No. 2 of 2016.
In a media statement, the Secretary to the Cabinet said preparations would proceed for the inauguration, although the venue for the September 1, 2026 presidential swearing-in ceremony has not yet been announced.
He said the venue will be communicated to the public in due course.
The development clears the way for Hakainde Hichilema to officially assume the presidency of Zambia following the 2026 presidential election.
The swearing-in ceremony will mark an important stage in Zambia’s constitutional transition of power, with national attention expected to focus on the inauguration and the commencement of the new presidential term.

The announcement follows confirmation that no petition challenging the presidential election was filed within the constitutionally prescribed seven-day period.
