Chickens can spend the entire day wandering around the neighbourhood, scratching for food in nearby yards, gardens and fields, yet as evening approaches, they somehow find their way back to the exact home where they are kept.
So how do they do it?
While chickens are not as famous as pigeons for their navigation skills, scientists say they possess several natural abilities that help them remember and return to familiar places.
One of the main reasons chickens can find their way home is their excellent memory.
Contrary to the popular saying that someone has “a chicken’s memory,” research has shown that chickens can remember dozens of faces, recognise locations and recall food sources for long periods.
They quickly learn where they sleep, where food is usually available and which areas are safe or dangerous.
Over time, these locations become deeply familiar to them.
Chickens also rely heavily on landmarks.
As they move around during the day, they remember important features such as:

These landmarks act like natural signposts, helping them navigate back to their coop or home.

Can chickens ever get lost?

Young chickens that have not yet learned their surroundings are also more likely to become lost than experienced adult birds.

This is why poultry farmers often keep new chickens confined for several days before allowing them to roam freely.
Doing so helps them memorise the location of their coop and surrounding landmarks.
Some researchers have even suggested that birds, including chickens, may be able to sense subtle changes in the Earth’s magnetic field, although their navigation relies much more on vision, memory and familiar landmarks than long-distance migratory birds.
Ultimately, chickens do not possess GPS, but their remarkable combination of memory, excellent eyesight, recognition of landmarks and strong homing instincts enables them to return home day after day.
