“I Was the Richest Man in My Village… Then Everything Vanished Overnight”Kennedy Daka
My name is Kennedy Daka.
For years, people admired my life. I owned Five shops, a fleet of motorcycles, malls, houses and several acres of farmland. Whenever there was a wedding, funeral, or fundraiser, I was among the first people called to contribute.
Everyone believed my future was secure.
Then, within two years, everything changed.
My businesses started making losses for no clear reason. Trusted employees stole money. One of my shops caught fire after an electrical fault. My farm produced almost nothing despite good rains. Every investment I made failed.
It reached a point where I could barely pay school fees for my children.
People who once respected me started whispering behind my back.
“He has been abandoned by luck.”
Others laughed openly.
“I told you pride comes before a fall.”
Those words hurt more than losing money.
I visited banks looking for loans.
They rejected me.
I sold one property hoping to restart my business.
That investment also collapsed.
One evening, after returning home with empty pockets, I found my wife crying.
“There is nothing left in the house,” she said.
That night I could not sleep.
An elderly uncle visited the following morning.
After listening to my story, he suggested I visit a respected traditional spiritual healer in Chiengi District , Luapula province by name Dr Mawanda.
Although I had doubts, I decided to go.
When I arrived, the healer welcomed me calmly and asked me to explain everything from the beginning.
He listened without interrupting.
Then he asked about old family disputes, promises that had never been fulfilled, and whether I carried bitterness toward anyone.
After the discussion, he explained that, according to his tradition, healing begins with truth, reconciliation, and symbolic cleansing.
The ceremony used several traditional items.
There was a calabash filled with clean water, representing a fresh beginning.
There were medicinal herbs, prepared according to local tradition.
A small amount of white clay was placed on my forehead as a symbol of seeking purity of heart.
A little salt was placed in my hands to represent preservation of peace and honesty.
The smoke from burning traditional incense and herbs filled the room as prayers were offered.
Finally, I was given a small bundle of herbs to place near the entrance of my home as a reminder to leave anger and fear outside my household.
The healer reminded me of something I have never forgotten.
“Symbols alone do not rebuild a life. Go home. Repair broken relationships. Work honestly. Be disciplined. Let this day remind you to begin again.”
I followed that advice.
I apologized to relatives with whom I had not spoken for years.
I forgave people who had wronged me.
I stopped blaming everyone else for my failures.
I reorganized my remaining business instead of chasing risky investments.
Months passed.
A contractor I had worked with many years before unexpectedly contacted me with a supply opportunity.
The order was small.
I completed it faithfully.
He introduced me to another client.
Then another.
Within a year, I had rebuilt one shop.
Two years later, I had opened another business.
Although I never recovered every Kwacha I had lost, I recovered something even more valuable.
Peace.
Hope.
Confidence.
Today, when people ask me what happened, I tell them my journey was not about magic.
The traditional ceremony became a powerful turning point that encouraged me to reflect, let go of resentment, and start rebuilding my life with renewed purpose.
