Lusaka, 6th May 2026 – The Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) has issued a reminder to all broadcasting stations across Zambia to ensure that musical content aired on radio and television aligns with the country’s cultural values, norms, and public expectations.
The Authority emphasised that music and its accompanying visuals remain a powerful form of expression, with significant influence on attitudes and behaviour, particularly among young audiences.
As such, broadcasters are urged to exercise strong editorial judgement when selecting and scheduling content for public consumption.
According to the IBA, all programming must reflect the culture, character, needs, and aspirations of the Zambian people, in line with Section 24(1)(a) of the IBA (Amendment) Act of 2010.
“In this regard, broadcasters are expected to ensure that the content aired is not only entertaining but also culturally appropriate and consistent with applicable laws and audience expectations,” the statement read.
The Authority further encouraged television stations, in particular, to preview both local and acquired musical and film content before broadcast, in order to determine their suitability for general audiences.
In addition, local content producers have been urged to remain mindful of cultural and legal standards when developing material intended for broadcast.
The IBA noted that productions should reflect and respect Zambian values while still fostering creativity within the media industry.
The Authority expressed confidence that broadcasters will continue to uphold professional and ethical standards in promoting responsible and culturally sensitive programming.
The statement was issued by Ms. Katendi Wandi, Director of Corporate Communication at the Independent Broadcasting Authority.
