Lusaka, 23rd April 2026 – The Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) has issued a formal advisory to all broadcasting stations in Zambia, urging responsible and ethical coverage of matters surrounding the late former Republican President Edgar Chagwa Lungu.
In its statement, the Authority acknowledged the high public interest in developments related to the former Head of State but emphasized the need for caution, sensitivity, and professionalism in reporting.
“The Authority wishes to provide guidance to broadcasting stations on the coverage of matters surrounding the late former Republican President Edgar Chagwa Lungu. While matters relating to the late former President are of high public interest, broadcasters are urged to exercise caution and responsibility in their coverage to avoid causing further distress to the bereaved family and unnecessary public anxiety,” the statement read.
The IBA further advised media houses to ensure that all information disseminated to the public is obtained from credible and official sources, including authorised spokespersons. According to the Authority, this is essential in safeguarding information integrity and maintaining public trust in the media.
“The dissemination of unverified information not only undermines the credibility of broadcasting houses but also compromises the integrity of public information and the right of audiences to accurate and balanced reporting,” the statement added.
The guidance has been issued in accordance with Section 5 of the Independent Broadcasting Authority Act of 2002, which mandates the promotion of professional and ethical broadcasting standards across Zambia’s media landscape.
IBA Director General Webster Malido reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to ensuring responsible journalism during sensitive national moments, calling on broadcasters to uphold the highest ethical standards in their coverage.
The advisory comes at a time when public attention remains focused on developments surrounding the late former President, with the IBA stressing the importance of accuracy, restraint, and respect in all related reporting.
