The Lusaka Regional Immigration Office on 9th May, 2024 apprehended 13 suspected illegal immigrants in a routine cleanup operation in Libala, Chalala and Chilenje. Those apprehended in the operation aimed at riding the Province of illegal immigrants were 11 Burundians, one Congolese and one Tanzanian. All suspects were undocumented at the time of the operation and are detained pending screening.
Similarly, a joint team of Immigration and Police Officers in Kilwa have apprehended two male Congolese nationals for unlawful stay. Ngoi Luwi (25) and Philemon Ilunga (19), both residents of Lukonzolwa village of the Democratic Republic of Congo were apprehended on 9th May, 2024 in Chipulwe Village of Nchelenge District after they failed to produce documentation legalizing their stay in Zambia. They are detained pending further formalities. The Lusaka and Kilwa operations brought the number of persons apprehended for various immigration offences on 9th May, 2024 countrywide to 38.
Meanwhile, the Kafue Immigration Office on 9th May, 2024 secured the convictions of six illegal immigrants for various immigration offences. Two Zimbabweans, one Burundian and one Congolese were convicted for illegal entry and were sentenced to pay fines of between K 5,000 and K 12,500 or serve seven to nine months simple imprisonment. One Burundian was convicted for illegal entry and unlawful stay and fined K 10,000 or seven months simple imprisonment while one Burundian refugee was convicted and sentenced to pay a fine of K 1,500 or 30 days simple imprisonment for residing outside a refugee settlement without a gate pass.
Further, on 9th May 2024, the Ndola Magistrate Court convicted a 32-year-old female Congolese Refugee for being found in a place other than a refugee settlement without a valid pass contrary to section 31(4) of the Immigration and Deportation Act Number 18 of 2010 of the Laws of Zambia. Kalenga Masau who is based at Maheba Refugee Settlement was arrested on 30th April, 2024 by the Ndola Regional Immigration Office at the ZNS Checkpoint along the Sakania road. This after she failed to produce a valid gate pass authorizing her to be outside Maheba Refugee Settlement. She was sentenced to pay a fine of K 10,000 or six months simple imprisonment. The Kafue and Ndola Court outcomes brought the number of convictions secured by the Department on 9th May, 2024 to 16.
Furthermore, the Department of Immigration on 9th May, 2024 removed five illegal immigrants from the country and refused two foreign nationals entry for failing to meet entry requirements.
