MWANDI, Zambia – Socialite and aspiring politician Iris Kaingu Kamwi has announced her resignation from the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) and formally dissociated herself from the party.

In a resignation letter dated June 3, 2026, addressed to the UPND Secretary General, Kaingu stated that she was stepping down from her membership with immediate effect and would no longer participate in any current or future activities under the party’s banner.

According to the letter, Kaingu said her decision followed her experience in attempting to participate in the affairs of the party in Mwandi Constituency, where she claimed her efforts to join and contribute meaningfully were not accepted.

She further revealed that her ambition to contest the forthcoming parliamentary elections on the UPND ticket was unsuccessful.

“Despite my efforts to join and contribute meaningfully to the party, I was not accepted. Furthermore, my aspiration to contest the forthcoming parliamentary elections on the UPND ticket was not successful,” she stated in the letter.

Kaingu said that in light of these developments, she had resolved to terminate her association with the party and would explore other avenues through which she could continue serving the people of Mwandi and the nation at large.

The socialite and businesswoman also requested that her resignation be formally recorded and that the necessary updates be made regarding her membership status.

The letter was copied to the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), the UPND Provincial Chairperson for Western Province, the UPND District Chairperson for Mwandi District, and the UPND Constituency Chairperson for Mwandi Constituency.

The development comes as political parties across Zambia continue preparations for the 2026 General Election, with aspiring candidates positioning themselves ahead of the polls.
