UNRULY, criminally-minded youths, commonly known as Junkies, harassed and attacked a shop owner in Lusaka’s Chawama compound on Friday night.

According to a resident of Chawama, Hussein Jawara, the junkies, ranging from the Giggies ages of 11 years to 18 years, gathered monkey courage to attack a named business owner, whose shop is like mouth-to-nose distance away from Chawama Police Station.

But that proximity of the shop to a police station did not deter the amateur pilfers from going ahead with the criminal mission, around 21:00 hours.

They roundly attacked the shop owner but because of the victim’s hatred for sores and consequently death, he stood his ground and fought back, tooth and nail.

Seeing how danger had escalated in the named shop, some passersby alerted officers at Chawama Police Station who rushed to go and rescue the man under attack.

Upon seeing the police, the Junkies put up a show of speed that would have impressed Zambia Athletics (ZA) long-serving president Elias Mpondela.

Police ended up not picking up any Junkie, who they could have taken as feed for mosquitoes in a police custody.

The Junkies’ series of criminal actions have left many Chawama residents with fear.

According to a Chawama resident, the boys, who have not even attained the age for paying, let alone knowing, house rentals, are believed to be from two gangs calling themselves Lion City and Migos.

Earlier in the day on Friday, there was a Lion City versus Migos fight that saw bottles and stones flying to hit whoever.

The reason for the fight amongst these petty thieves was centred on some beautiful Chawama girls who are proving too seductive to these errant boys.

Zambia Police deputy spokesperson Danny Mwale confirmed the incident to Kalemba.
