LUSAKA, Zambia – June 15, 2026 – The Zambia Police Service is investigating an attempted murder case that occurred in Kabwata Site and Service, Lusaka, after a 40-year-old woman was allegedly shot in the forehead by a man identified as a Zambia Army officer.
According to a statement issued by Zambia Police Service Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi, the incident took place on June 13, 2026, at approximately 23:00 hours. Kabwata Police Station received a report from a concerned resident, aged 37, who informed authorities that a woman from the same area had been shot by a man believed to be her acquaintance.
Preliminary investigations indicate that on the night of the incident, the suspect drove the victim to her residence in Kabwata Site and Service. For reasons that are still under investigation, he allegedly shot her in the forehead using a firearm believed to be a pistol before fleeing the scene.
Police officers responded immediately and found the victim lying on the ground with a gunshot wound. She was rushed to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH), where she was admitted for treatment. Authorities have confirmed that the woman is currently in stable condition.
The suspect has been identified as Mwanauta Chansa, a Warrant Officer in the Zambia Army. Investigations suggest that after the shooting, he proceeded to the Kenneth Kaunda Peace Training Centre (KKPTC), commonly known as NANKING, where he allegedly ingested pesticide.
He was subsequently taken to Maina Soko Medical Centre for medical attention. However, police reports indicate that he later left the hospital without authorization and travelled to Mtendere Compound, where he allegedly ingested pesticide for a second time.
Law enforcement officers later located the suspect and arranged for his transfer to Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). According to police, Chansa was pronounced dead at approximately 03:00 hours on June 15, 2026, while receiving treatment. His body has since been deposited in the mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.
The Zambia Police Service says investigations are ongoing to establish all the facts surrounding the incident, including the circumstances that led to the shooting and the events that followed. Authorities have assured the public that further updates will be provided as investigations progress.
