*KALABO INTENSIFIES WDC FORMULATION*

Kalabo Town Council has intensified its efforts in community sensitization and voter registration in preparation for the upcoming Ward Development Committee (WDC) elections in the district.

Council Secretary, Kamwata Pongo, has disclosed that following a Ministerial directive, a multi-sectoral team of 25 members was constituted and trained by the Department of Planning.

“This team is responsible for conducting sensitization, registration, nominations, and elections in Kalabo Central (14 wards) and Liuwa (10 wards) constituencies, in accordance with the Local Government Act No. 2 of 2019.”

Mr. Pongo stated that community sensitization, voter registration, and nominations have already been carried out in all zones across nine wards in the Kalabo Central Constituency. These wards include Luanginga, Muchatanga, Yuka, Liumba, Mapungu, Ndoka, Lutwi, Kandambo, and Chilele.

He explained that the remaining five wards in Kalabo Central Constituency (Buleya, Lukona, Ng’uma, Mitwi, and Namulilo), and all 10 wards in Liuwa Constituency (Salunda, Libonda, Upangoma, Libilingoma, Siluwe, Sushekanu, Kuuli, Ng’unyama, Liuwa, and Luola) will also be covered in due course.

“The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development directed all local authorities to ensure the conclusion of Ward Development Committee (WDC) Formulation by March 31, 2024 and we will endeavor to conduct this exercise within the stipulated period.”

The Council Secretary said the awareness activities funded under the CDF Administrative Component, commenced on March 1, 2024, and have been conducted through various channels including one-on-one community meetings in markets, churches, and schools, as well as on social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp. Saturated public announcements have also been made using a mobile public address (PA) system to enhance target community awareness.

He added that Zonal Representative Elections in the aforementioned areas are scheduled for the week beginning Monday, March 11, with each ward assigned a specific date.

Mr. Pongo urged all eligible persons in the 24 wards to register as voters and subsequently participate in this very important national exercise.
