A 21-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the death of her three-week-old baby, whose body was reportedly retrieved from a well in Kalulushi District after police investigations into a suspected child-stealing case.
Zambia Police Service Public Relations Officer Chipo Kaitisha said the woman, identified as Grace Shilimbwene of Wusakile Township in Kitwe, initially reported that her baby, Lubuto Simiti, had been stolen by an unknown person.
Ms Kaitisha said the report was made on October 13, 2026, at 09:00 hours.
However, police investigations allegedly linked the mother to the infant’s death, with preliminary findings indicating that she had thrown the baby into a well in a nearby village.
According to Ms Kaitisha, the incident is believed to have occurred in the Kakonge area between 23:30 hours on October 12 and 01:00 hours on October 13.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the alleged incident followed a dispute involving two men who had been in relationships with the suspect and were reportedly disagreeing over the child’s paternity.
Ms Kaitisha said the baby was retrieved from the well with the assistance of firefighters but was found dead.
The infant’s body was subsequently taken to Kalulushi District Hospital mortuary, where it is awaiting a postmortem examination to establish further details surrounding the death.
Police have arrested and detained Shilimbwene in connection with the matter, and a case of infanticide has been opened.
Ms Kaitisha said investigations into the incident were ongoing.
The case remains under investigation, and the allegations against the suspect have yet to be determined through the legal process.
