Independent Presidential Candidate Rev. Dr. Given Katuta has raised questions about the UPND government’s management of public resources, citing alleged delayed gratuity payments to former MPs and the expansion of Parliament.
Katuta has called on Zambians to scrutinize how public funds are managed and whether commitments to public servants are being met.
She pointed to the “delayed” payment of gratuity to 166 former MPs as a concern for public trust.
“Timely payment matters because it helps former officeholders transition and keeps trust in public institutions. Delays create uncertainty and weaken confidence in the system,” she said.
Katuta also noted that Parliament’s seats had been increased to 270, saying that while more representation can bring government closer to the people, it raises questions about planning.
“If the state is currently unable to settle gratuity for 166 former MPs, many are asking how it will manage salaries, benefits, and future gratuity for a larger Parliament,” she said.
Meanwhile, Katuta said voters should consider three factors before deciding on another term: fiscal discipline, consistency between decisions and capacity, and accountability in communicating challenges and solutions.
“Zambians deserve clear answers on these issues. A healthy democracy depends on citizens asking calmly and expecting transparent responses,” she added.
