ZAMBIAN legendary goal keeper Kennedy Mweene has decided to hang up his gloves and embark on the next chapter of his illustrious football career as a coach.

Mweene, 38 retired with a string of accomplishments under his belt, leaving a lasting legacy in both club and country football.

Fondly known as Kapalaya in South Africa, he has been a driving force for Mamelodi Sundowns in that country and Zambia, earning him the status of an icon.

“I’m hanging up my boots and gloves because I think I’ve played my part, both at the national team and the club level,” Mweene said.

“Football has taken me to places which I never dreamed of, one day to [even] be able to share the same pitch with some of the great players Africa has offered.”

During his time in South Africa, Mweene’s impressive achievements left an indelible mark on the sport. The shot-stopper claimed a staggering eight PSL League titles, three Nedbank Cups, two Telkom Knockout trophies, and a solitary MTN 8 triumph.

Additionally, he secured a remarkable NFD title, a CAF Super League crown, a CAF Champions League victory, and even conquered the African Cup of Nations in 2012.

Mamelodi Sundowns confirmed his departure and revealed that the iconic goalkeeper would remain with the club, transitioning into a role within Rhulani Mokwena’s technical team.

This move comes as no surprise, as Mweene has been seen actively involved with the technical staff in recent times, assisting as the assistant goalkeeper coach alongside Wendell Robinson.

Mweene’s talent and dedication propelled him to great heights, securing his position as one of Zambia’s most decorated players of the last 25 years.

With over 15 major titles to his name, including the prestigious African Cup of Nations, Mweene’s influence and impact on the game cannot be overstated.

Teammates and colleagues at Sundowns spoke highly of his character and contributions describing him as a fun-loving and honest individual.

Mweene served as a role model and motivator for his fellow players, especially the younger ones.

As the new era of goalkeepers unfolds, the number 16 Jersey, which Mweene donned will always be an inspiration for accomplished dreams, hard work and dedication.
