A 44-year-old teacher at Kapoche Day Secondary School in Katete has died after being struck by lightning.

Azibelito Phiri, a teacher of mathematics, met his fate on Friday last week around 14:50 hours in Kagoro on his way home from work.

Mr Phiri was struck by lightning when he took shelter from the rains under a mango tree. Eastern Province police commanding officer Limpo Liywalii said a report of sudden and unnatural death, which happened around 14:50 hours at Kagoro in Chieftainess Kawaza’s area, was received by police.

Kapoche Day Secondary School head teacher Benjamin Phiri also confirmed the incident on Breeze FM.

“After knocking off, he (Mr Phiri) decided to go home on foot as usual but on the way it started showering and he opted to sit under a mango tree. Suddenly, he was struck by lightning,” the head teacher said.

The victim was rushed to St Francis Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Recently, Meteorological Department meteorologist Peggy Zulu urged members of the public to avoid standing under trees when it is raining.
