A COUPLE of Mwansabombwe, Luapula Province, has died after being struck by lightning while in their house, the latest case among those being reported in different parts of the country in recent weeks.

But this one comes barely a week after lightning killed a set of twins who were playing in the house in Kawambwa.

Otherwise, there have been other cases, including a fisherman on Lake Mweru Wantipa in Nchelenge, a farmer in Kasama, and even a pregnant woman in Ikelenge.

For the couple – Obiston Chongo, 54, and his wife Josephine Bupe, 41, both of Mukamba village – the incident happened on Wednesday midday.

Mr Chongo’s younger brother, Jackson Musonda, 24, reported the incident to the police.

Luapula Province police commanding officer Fwambo Siame said the couple was in the house when the rains started.

After some time, the couple’s neighbours heard the pair crying for help, prompting them to rush to their house in an attempt to rescue the two.

“The couple was rushed to Mukamba Rural Health Centre, where they were pronounced dead,” Mr Siame said.

The husband’s body had no physical injuries while the wife’s had a bruised eye and cheek.

Mr Siame said the bodies were taken to Mbereshi District Hospital mortuary awaiting burial.
