Chipata, Zambia – May 2026 – Police in Chipata have arrested a 33-year-old Lusaka-based police officer in connection with the alleged robbery of over K600,000 from Zanaco Bank.
The suspect has been identified as Emmanuel Mphatso Tembo, who is believed to have stolen the money from the Zanaco Lusaka Civic Centre branch, where he was reportedly deployed as a security guard.
Robbery Allegedly Happened in September 2025
According to reports, the robbery is said to have occurred on 15th September 2025 around 17:00 hours, when Tembo allegedly stole the money while on duty.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba confirmed the arrest and told Breeze FM News that police officers in the province had been tracking the suspect for about a month before finally apprehending him.
Suspect Captured in Kapata Area
Mr. Mweemba said the suspect was arrested on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, in the Kapata area of Chipata, following continued investigations and surveillance by police.
He confirmed that Tembo is currently in police custody as investigations continue.
“Eastern Province Is a No-Go Area for Criminals” – Mweemba
Mr. Mweemba warned that Eastern Province will not tolerate criminal activity, even from within the police service.
He cautioned officers who may be tempted to engage in criminal acts that the province is not a safe hiding place.
He further advised police officers to be content with their salaries and avoid actions that bring embarrassment and shame to the police command.
Police Warn Officers Against Criminal Behaviour
The arrest has sparked renewed public debate about discipline and integrity within the police service, especially in cases involving officers accused of serious crimes such as theft and robbery.
