Lusaka, Zambia – 2026 – Prominent Lusaka-based legal practitioner Dickson Jere has officially announced that he will contest as Member of Parliament for Lusaka Central Constituency in this year’s general elections.
Jere, who is well known for his legal commentary and public engagement on national issues, made the announcement in a statement posted on his social media page titled “Dickson Jere Goes Central.”
“I Have Heard the Calls” – Jere
In his statement, Jere revealed that he has received growing encouragement from various groups urging him to enter active politics.
“I have heard the calls from many quarters for me to contest as Member of Parliament this year,” he said.
He added that before making the final decision, he consulted widely with family, friends, clergy, students, youths, women and senior citizens.
Decision Influenced by ECZ Delimitation Report
Jere also disclosed that he studied the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) Delimitation Report closely before deciding on the constituency he would contest.
He stated that after considering the delimitation process and the realities on the ground, he resolved to stand in Lusaka Central because that is where he spends most of his life.
“98% of My Life Is Spent in Lusaka Central”
Announcing his decision, Jere said he wants to be an ever-present Member of Parliament who is always accessible to constituents.
“I wish to formally announce that I will be contesting as Member of Parliament for Lusaka Central Constituency. This decision has made in light of the fact that 98% of my life is spent in Lusaka Central,” he wrote.
He explained that he works, lives, worships, plays, shops, schools and eats in Lusaka Central, adding that most of his assets are also located within the constituency.
“I want to be the ever present MP… I do not want to be an absent MP,” he emphasized.
Jere Declares Support for President Hakainde Hichilema
In the same statement, Dickson Jere reaffirmed his position that Zambia needs political stability and economic transformation.
He also openly endorsed President Hakainde Hichilema, stating that he believes the Head of State deserves another term in office.
“It is, therefore, my firm belief that the current President, Mr Hakainde Hichilema, deserves another term in office. He has my support and I believe he is best option for the country at the moment,” Jere stated.
To Contest Under UPND
Jere further announced that he will seek the Lusaka Central parliamentary seat under the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) and will participate in the party’s internal selection process.
He confirmed that he has formally launched his campaign bid.
“I have formally launched my bid today,” he wrote.
“Kwasila Dickson Jere Atenga!”
Jere concluded his statement with a slogan that has since sparked excitement online:
“Kwasila Dickson Jere Atenga!”
The announcement has generated significant debate on social media, with many Lusaka residents and political observers now watching closely as the Lusaka Central race begins to take shape ahead of the 2026 elections.
