LUSAKA – The Organized People’s Party (OPP) has announced that its vice-presidential running mate, Andyford Mayele Banda, has stepped down ahead of Zambia’s 2026 General Elections.

The development was confirmed in a statement issued by OPP presidential candidate Dr. Brian Mushimba, who said the party respects Banda’s decision and has already notified the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ).

OPP Confirms Resignation of Running Mate

Dr. Mushimba said the party appreciates Banda’s contribution during their political journey and wished him well in his future endeavours.

“The Organized People’s Party (OPP) wishes to inform the public that Mr. Andyford Banda has stepped down as our vice-presidential running mate,” Dr. Mushimba said.

“We fully respect his decision, thank him for his dedication to our shared journey, and wish him the very best moving forward.”

The statement did not disclose the reasons behind Banda’s decision to step down.

Party Seeks ECZ Guidance

Following the resignation, Dr. Mushimba said the OPP has formally informed the Electoral Commission of Zambia and requested guidance on the legal process for replacing its vice-presidential candidate.

He said the party is committed to complying with the country’s electoral laws and any directives that will be issued by the Commission.

“Following this development, we have officially notified the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) and requested guidance on the next legal steps. The OPP will fully comply with the law and the directives issued by the Commission,” he stated.

OPP Says It Remains United

Despite the unexpected change, the party says it remains united and focused on its campaign ahead of the August 13, 2026 General Elections.

Dr. Mushimba reaffirmed the OPP’s commitment to offering what he described as credible, practical, and principled leadership to the Zambian people.

“Our party remains united, focused, and deeply committed to providing Zambians with the credible, practical, and principled leadership our country deserves. Our vision and our promises to the people of Zambia stand firm,” he said.

Further Update Expected

The Organized People’s Party said it will provide the nation with a formal update once it receives further guidance from the Electoral Commission of Zambia regarding the replacement of its vice-presidential running mate.

The statement was issued by Dr. Brian Mushimba, the OPP presidential candidate, while media inquiries were directed to Francis Chipalo, the party’s Media Consultant for Politics.
