Lusaka Man Arrested for Allegedly Strangling 5-Year-Old Nephew to Death in George Compound

A 30-year-old man has been arrested in Lusaka after he allegedly strangled his five-year-old nephew to death in George Compound, Matero, in a shocking incident that has left the local community in disbelief.

The Zambia Police Service confirmed that the suspect, identified as Clayton Phiri, is in custody as investigations into the suspected murder continue.

Child Allegedly Strangled to Death

According to a police statement issued on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, the victim has been identified as Samuel Phiri, aged five.

Police say the incident is alleged to have occurred on July 6, 2026, at around 20:00 hours, while the matter was officially reported to Matero Police Station shortly after midnight on July 7, 2026, at approximately 00:40 hours.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect allegedly strangled the child, causing fatal injuries to the neck.

Neighbour Allegedly Witnessed the Incident

Police said initial findings suggest that a neighbour heard cries for help and rushed outside to investigate.

Upon reaching the scene, the neighbour allegedly found the suspect strangling the young boy.

Members of the public quickly intervened, restrained the suspect, and rushed the child to George Clinic in an attempt to save his life.

Sadly, the child was pronounced dead upon arrival at the health facility.

Body Taken to UTH Mortuary

Police have confirmed that the body of the deceased has since been transferred to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) Mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.

The examination is expected to help establish the exact cause of death as investigations continue.

Suspect Remains in Police Custody

The suspect, Clayton Phiri, remains in police custody while detectives continue gathering evidence surrounding the case.

Authorities say they are yet to establish what may have led to the alleged attack.

“The motive for the alleged offence has not yet been established,” the Zambia Police Service said in its statement.

Investigations Ongoing

Police have assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that further information will be provided as the case progresses.

The incident has shocked residents of George Compound, with many expressing sadness over the death of the young child.

The Zambia Police Service has not disclosed when the suspect is expected to appear in court.
