Lusaka man loses life in Great East Road accident

A 33-year-old Lusaka man, Timothy Mpande of Kaunda Square stage one, died after being struck by a motor vehicle near the University of Zambia Footbridge on Sunday at approximately 10:30 hours.

According to Deputy Police Public Relations officer Danny Mwale, the accident occurred as Mpande was crossing the road towards East Park Mall.

“He was hit by a Mazda BT 50, bearing registration number BAG 3481, driven by a 49-year-old man identified as Stephen Chiluka of Meanwood area in Lusaka. Chiluka was traveling towards Munali area at the time of the accident.” said Mwale.

Mpande was rushed to Levy Mwanawasa Teaching Hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

“The body of the deceased is in the same Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem while the vehicle has been impounded for re-examination purposes,” added Mwale.

The driver, Chiluka, was not hurt.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
