MALAWIAN GETS FOUR YEARS WITH HARD LABOUR FOR ILLEGAL ENTRY AND ENGAGING IN BUSINESS WITHOUT A PERMIT AND ZAMBIAN OF SESHEKE FINED K 80,000 FOR HARBOURING AND ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT
The Chipata Magistrate Court on 14th May, 2024 convicted a 22-year-old Malawian Businessman, Fredrick Misomali Junior for unlawful entry and engaging in business without a permit. He was apprehended on 3rd May, 2024 in the Chipata Motel Area during a routine clean-up operation after he failed to produce documentation legalizing his stay in Zambia. He was found selling shoes at the time of the operation. Investigations later revealed that he was a second offender who entered the country illegally on 2nd May, 2024 and conducted business without having an immigration permit. He was sentenced to four years imprisonment with hard labour without the option of a fine.
Further, on 14th May, 2024, the Katima Mulilo Immigration Office secured the conviction of a 36-year-old Zambian of Sesheke Districtās Makanda Village, Mulusiye Sibungo, for harbouring an illegal immigrant. The Sesheke Magistrate Court sentenced him to pay a fine of K80,000 or in default to serve nine months simple imprisonment. He was apprehended on 13th April, 2024. Investigations into reports from concerned residents of the presence of a suspected illegal immigrant in the area led a team of Officers to a shop belonging to Sibungo. The Officers later found a 36-year-old undocumented Tanzanian hiding in the shop after Sibungo had initially denied knowing his whereabouts.
Furthermore, on the same day, the Sesheke magistrate court convicted and sentenced a male Namibian to six months imprisonment with hard labour for escaping from lawful custody. Mubita Nawa (20) had earlier escaped from Sesheke Police Station where he had been detained having been arrested and charged with illegal entry on 8th May 2024. On the count of illegal entry, he was convicted and sentenced to pay a fine of K 700 or nine months simple imprisonment. The Chipata and Sesheke court outcomes brought the number of convictions secured by the Department of Immigration between 13th and 14th May, 2024 to 45.
In addition, the Department of Immigration in Isoka has deported a 49-year-old Tanzanian after serving a ten-year prison sentence for aggravated robbery. Rashid Mchafu was arrested for aggravated robbery by Police in Lusaka District where he was convicted and sentenced to ten years imprisonment with hard labour on 18th April, 2021. He was later transferred to Isoka Correctional Facility where he served his sentence until it expired on 6th May, 2024. He was deported to Tanzania on 9th May, 2024 via Nakonde Border Control. The Department in Chipata also deported six Malawian nationals after serving their sentences for unlawful entry and theft.
Meanwhile, the Department of Immigration between 13th and 14th May, 2024 apprehended 77 persons for various immigration offences countrywide, removed 13 illegal immigrants from the country and refused three foreign nationals entry for failing to meet entry requirements
