A GIRL aged 15 of Chongwe has been hospitalised at Chongwe District Hospital after she sustained an injury on her left leg when her uncle whipped her as she went to her bedroom with a television remote which he suspected to be a cell phone.

The girl was injured with a rubber whip on her leg after her uncle thought she was communicating on the phone with her boyfriend.

Zambia Police Service deputy spokesperson Danny Mwale and the victim confirmed the incident in separate interviews yesterday.

Mr Mwale said police received a report from Sianyanga, a gender based violence activist, on behalf of the victim of Dam area of Chieftainess Nkomesha’s area.The incident happened on September 9, 2023 around 21:00 hours.

“On the fateful day, the victim was watching television. After switching off she went to sleep with the remote then one of her siblings aged five went to the bedroom and saw her with the remote which he suspected to be a mobile phone. He quickly went to report to his father and accused the girl of owning a phone and that she was hiding it in her bedroom,” he said.
“The victim’s uncle then got angered and started beating her .

Upon crying and shouting for help one of the neighbours, identified as Precious, went to her rescue and took her to the police the following morning.

Mr Mwale said the suspect has since been arrested and is in police custody.
The victim said her uncle and his children have been suspecting her of having a boyfriend but she has never had one before.
