Chama, Zambia – May 31, 2026 – A 35-year-old farmer from Chama District in Eastern Province has died after suffering a snake bite while guarding his rice field in a Game Management Area, police have confirmed.

The deceased has been identified as Dickson Sinyinza of Ng’anjo Chiwato Village in Chief Kambombo’s chiefdom.

According to Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba, the tragic incident occurred between 14:00 hours and 23:00 hours on May 29, 2026. The matter was later reported to Chama Police Station by the victim’s younger brother, James Sinyinza, on May 30.

Mr. Mweemba explained that Mr. Sinyinza had camped at his rice field together with his wife, Dyness Nyirongo, in an effort to protect their crops from birds and wild animals that frequently destroy harvests in the area.

The police chief said the farmer later complained of a toothache and decided to rest under a tree while his wife went into a nearby bush to search for traditional medicine.

However, tragedy struck shortly afterward.

“As the wife was returning, she heard her husband shouting that he had been bitten by a snake,” Mr. Mweemba said.

Upon rushing to the scene, Mrs. Nyirongo reportedly found a large snake attached to her husband’s leg.

Family members responded to the distress call and attempted to save Mr. Sinyinza by administering traditional remedies. Despite their efforts, his condition continued to deteriorate, and he later died at around 23:00 hours.

Police say the body has since been deposited at Chama District Hospital Mortuary awaiting further procedures.

A physical examination conducted by officers revealed a swollen left thigh with black spots, injuries consistent with a venomous snake bite.

Mr. Mweemba stated that no foul play is suspected in the incident.

The tragedy has once again highlighted the dangers faced by farmers who spend long hours guarding crops in remote areas, particularly in regions where encounters with snakes and other wildlife are common.

Authorities have encouraged members of the public working in bush areas and farming zones to exercise caution and seek immediate medical attention whenever snake bites occur, as prompt treatment can significantly improve survival chances.
