Unionized workers at the Mulungushi International Conference Center (MICC) in Lusaka have accused Centre management of illegally instituting a redundancy program.

Writing to the Labour Commissioner through the Hotel Catering Tourism and Allied Workers Union of Zambia, the workers accused management of deliberately refusing to engage with them.

The workers had in March demanded the removal from office of the MICC acting general manager Denis Moonga for alleged unfair dismissals.

The affected employees, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confided that they’d been told MICC was loss-making and needed to reduce labour. The employees dismissed the claims as being untrue.

The departments affected by staff redundancies include laundry and house keeping.

When contacted for a comment, Moonga expressed displeasure over the matter before rudely hanging up the phone.

And Labour Commissioner Givens Muntengwa has assured that his office will handle the issue.
