The incident is alleged to have happened between 17 June 2026 at 17:30 hours and 18 June 2026 at 09:00 hours in Kambuma Village, Chief Chitina, Mkushi District.

According to details made available to TV Yatu, on June 17, 2026 at around 17:30 hours, the grandmother of the suspect was unwell and resting in her bedroom when she heard her, and two other children aged nine and ten, telling her that they would be going to fetch water from a well, within the village.

At around 18:20 hours, the two children returned without the victim and when she asked, the two juveniles, the now victim’s grandmother that their friend was left at her aunt’s place, within the area.

With this response, the grandmother did not pay much attention because the victim frequently visited her aunt’s place.

The following day at around 07:00 hours, the two juveniles went to pick up the victim at her aunt’s place, but she was not there.

When informed of this, the victim’s grandmother launched a search for her beloved 12-year-old granddaughter.

As the search went on, she search team spotted the victim going home.

When the grandmother asked the 12-year-old where she had been, she revealed she had been with a boy at his house and that “everything happened”.

She told her grandmother that he had just released her, that morning.

The grandmother, with the help of others, picked both the girl and boy and quickly took the victim to Upper Lunsemfwa Clinic, where medical examinations were carried out and showed that the 17-year-old boy that had allegedly defiled the girl, was HIV positive.

On realising that members of the community were about to hand him over to the Police, the male juvenile took off, disappearing in the bushes of Mkushi District.

Central Province Police Commanding Officer Lameck Chirwa tells TV Yatu that his officers have since launched a manhunt for the suspect.
