RESIDENTS living around the Kalingalinga Shoprite area, witnessed a horrific murder on Tuesday evening, when 22-year-old Wilson Mulenga Chanda lost his life in attempt to retrieve his phone snatched by criminals in a moving car.

Chanda, a mobile money vendor at Shoprite Kalingalinga, had his life tragically cut short when he encountered two criminals who ruthlessly pushed him out of a moving motor vehicle and then callously ran over him.

The incident occurred around 20:00 hours in the bustling streets of Kalingalinga when the two suspects, masquerading as ordinary individuals, borrowed a cell phone from Chanda.

They claimed to be making a simple call, but little did Chanda know that he had just handed his lifeline to criminals.

Realisation struck Chanda when the suspects revealed their true intentions – they were mobile phone thieves on the prowl. In a desperate bid retrieve his phone and escape his attackers, Chanda clung to the car door as the vehicle sped along Alick Nkhata Road.

As the situation escalated into a life-and-death struggle, a vigilant police officer, who happened to be in the vicinity, sprang into action firing warning gunshots in an attempt to halt the moving vehicle and rescue Chanda from the clutches of danger.

But the criminals were relentless; they continued to accelerate, ignoring the desperate pleas of Chanda who was pushed from the moving motor vehicle, crashing onto the unforgiving tarmac below.

The impact was devastating, resulting in a fatal head injury. Chanda’s life was extinguished in an instant, just a stone’s throw from the Kalingalinga police post.

Undeterred by the gunfire, the suspects sped away.

Police confirmed the incident and investigators discovered that the criminals had attempted to evade capture by altering the vehicle’s number plate using a simple seal tape.

The vehicle, a Toyota Corolla with registration number BAF 5725, was swiftly impounded and secured at the Woodlands police station

“They turned “F” to “P” and “2” to “8”,” police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga stated.
“The motor vehicle has since been impounded and parked at Woodlands police station.”

Hamoonga said a manhunt for the criminals has been launched while the deceased’s body was deposited in the University Teaching Hospital mortuary
