Police nab Socialist Party youth leader for instigating UNZA unrest

THE national youth secretary for the Socialist Party, Gabriel Elias Banda, has been arrested and charged with two offenses, linking him as the alleged mastermind behind the recent protests at the University of Zambia.

Banda is believed to have initiated the rioting and looting that marred UNZA on September 18, 2023, around 19:00 hours, with the unrest spilling over to the next day.

He is currently in custody and is expected to appear in court soon for the offences of proposing violence and criminal trespass.

As authorities continue their efforts to maintain law and order and bring those responsible for the UNZA disturbances to justice, Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga earlier revealed that five others were arrested in connection to the case.

Four of whom are students namely; Chawezi Muwowo, 21, from Kabangwe, a first-year student studying economics, Kennedy Banda, 24, from Kapiri Mposhi, a fourth-year student studying Project management, Kizito Banda, 20, from Chilanga, a second-year student studying Civil engineering and Masho Kapembwa Mulenga, 21, from Salama Park, a third-year student studying law.

The other suspect is Gift Kambela, aged 23, from Mutendere, an ice scream seller at the higher learning institution.

They have been charged with one count of breaking into a building and committing a felony.

According to Hamoonga, the Police recovered various stolen items, including a 25kg bag of mealie meal, two deep freezers, and photography albums, all valued at K12,010.

Among the evidence is a closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage, which is expected to play a crucial role in the ongoing investigation.

The five suspects have been released on police bond as they await their court appearances.
