Mobile Money Scams in Zambia: 7 Mistakes That Could Cost You Your Money

Mobile money has made it easier for Zambians to send money, pay bills and conduct everyday transactions without carrying cash. But the convenience also means that a moment of carelessness can put your money at risk.

One of the most important precautions is to never share your mobile money PIN or one-time verification code with someone who calls or messages you. A person may claim to be a customer service agent, an employee of a mobile network or someone helping you reverse a transaction. Do not assume the claim is genuine.

Another common risk is sending money to the wrong number. Before confirming a transfer, check the recipient’s number and the name displayed on the transaction screen. A few seconds of checking can prevent a costly mistake.

Be cautious when someone claims to have sent you money and asks you to return it immediately. Check your own transaction history or balance through the official service rather than relying on an SMS screenshot or a message forwarded to you.

Fake payment messages are another reason to verify transactions independently. If you sell goods, provide services or run a small business, do not release an item simply because a customer shows you a message that appears to confirm payment.

Unexpected calls about account problems deserve particular attention. Scammers may create urgency by claiming that your account will be blocked unless you follow their instructions. End the call if you are unsure and contact your mobile money provider through its official customer service channels.

You should also be careful with links sent through text messages or messaging applications. A link claiming that you have won a prize, qualified for a reward or must update your account could lead to a fraudulent website designed to collect your personal information.

Finally, avoid conducting transactions while distracted. When you are rushing, tired or talking to someone, it becomes easier to enter the wrong number or approve a transaction without checking the details.

If you suspect fraud, contact your provider immediately through official channels, request assistance in securing the account and preserve relevant transaction messages and reference numbers. Report suspected criminal activity to the appropriate authorities. Never share your PIN while seeking help.

Mobile money remains a useful financial tool, but users must treat their PINs, verification codes and transaction details as confidential information.

The safest habit is simple: verify first, confirm the details and never allow a stranger to rush you into moving your money.
