MONGU COUNCIL SEIZES 15KG MEAT
MONGU Municipal Council has confiscated 15 kilogrammes (kg) of uncertified meat which was being sold in unsanitary conditions at Mandanga market.
The confiscated meat was later fed to crocodiles at a farm in Mabumbu area. Council assistant public relations manager Abigail Sitenge said the meat was seized during a routine inspection by public health inspectors.
“The traders were found selling meat that was not covered, flies were all over and it was not certified for human consumption, meaning that the source of the meat was not approved by the council,” Ms Sitenge said in a statement.
She advised traders of fresh foods to ensure they trade in conditions that are permitted by law, while consumers have been cautioned to avoid buying meat sold in unhygienic places.
And in Kaoma, the local authority conducted a sensitisation meeting for food outlet owners and their staff where council secretary Peter Sati stressed the importance of hygiene.
“Food hygiene is one of the most pressing challenges facing the food handlers today.
“The meeting would provide a platform for stakeholders to share insights, explore innovative solutions, and develop strategies for mitigating the risks posed by lack of hygiene to food safety and security,” Mr Sati said in a statement released by council public relations officer Mike Daka.
