Mulungushi University Student Dies After Reported Dispute with Boyfriend

A Mulungushi University second year student has allegedly died after taking her own life following a reported argument with her boyfriend, who is said to be a student at another university.

The deceased has been identified as Mwiche Kaona, who was reportedly facing personal challenges, including issues linked to her romantic relationship, according to people close to the matter.

Mwiche was widely known for her active role in youth advocacy and was the administrator of a Facebook page with over 20,000 followers, where she frequently spoke out on matters affecting young people across Zambia.

Her advocacy work included promoting menstrual hygiene awareness for young girls, supporting people living with disabilities, engaging in various community-based initiatives, and participating in programmes driven by non-governmental organisations focused on youth empowerment.

In 2023, Mwiche was also involved in discussions and activities centred on human rights for persons with disabilities, earning recognition as a young leader passionate about social change.

Many who followed her work described her as a rising voice whose dedication and commitment positioned her as a potential future changemaker.
Meanwhile, authorities have launched investigations to establish the exact circumstances surrounding her death.

Mwiche’s passing has left many students, friends and members of the public in shock, especially those who drew inspiration from her advocacy work and public engagement.
Her death has also renewed conversations online about mental health, emotional wellbeing, and the hidden struggles young people often face behind closed doors.
