LUSAKA – While many people enjoy sugary foods and drinks as part of their daily routine, health experts are increasingly warning about the hidden dangers of excessive sugar consumption. According to Dr. Aaron Mujajati, sugar may be doing far more damage to the human body than most people realize.

In a recent health awareness message, Dr. Mujajati described sugar as a “silent enemy of health and aging,” highlighting its link to serious medical conditions including diabetes, heart disease, dementia, and premature aging.

How Sugar Increases the Risk of Diabetes

According to Dr. Mujajati, consistently high blood sugar levels can make it difficult for the body to use insulin effectively. This condition, known as insulin resistance, is one of the leading causes of Type 2 diabetes.

When left unmanaged, diabetes can lead to life-threatening complications such as heart disease, kidney failure, nerve damage, and vision loss.

Health experts recommend reducing the intake of processed sugars and sugary beverages to help maintain healthy blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of developing diabetes.

The Link Between Sugar and Brain Health

Dr. Mujajati also warned that excessive sugar consumption may negatively affect brain function.

Research has shown that insulin resistance and chronically elevated blood sugar levels are associated with cognitive decline, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease. Some researchers have even referred to Alzheimer’s as “Type 3 Diabetes” because of the brain’s reduced ability to utilize glucose effectively.

As a result, people with poor blood sugar control may experience memory problems, reduced concentration, and impaired decision-making abilities over time.

Beyond its effects on internal organs, sugar can also impact physical appearance.

Dr. Mujajati explained that sugar contributes to a process known as glycation, where excess sugar molecules bind to important proteins such as collagen and elastin. These proteins are responsible for keeping the skin firm, smooth, and youthful.

The process creates harmful compounds known as Advanced Glycation End-products (AGEs), which weaken the skin’s structure and accelerate visible signs of aging.
