A tobacco farmer in Chipangali District, Eastern Province, yesterday woke up to a rude shock after discovering a coffin in his field.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba says Benjamin Banda, had gone to his Virginia tobacco crop field around 7:30 am to remove suckers when he stumbled upon the coffin covered with a blue, red, and yellow chitenge material.

Mr. Mweemba says Banda alerted local leaders, including Headman Elias Nyirongo and Chief Chanje, who called in a traditional doctor, to handle the situation, who conducted traditional practices and allegedly reduced the coffin’s size.

He explains that According to the field owner, he had been farming on the land for nine years without experiencing a bumper harvest, despite seeking traditional protection for his crops.

Mr. Mweemba says Banda believes the coffin was used to spiritually steal produce from his field and was allegedly used as a means of transportation.

He says the coffin was taken to Chief Chanje’s Palace and later handed over to the police at Chipata Central Police Station and investigations have since been instituted.
