The case of Nakonde Police Constable Edson Mweemba, accused of causing the death of Chisanga Kaputa, a 39-year-old teacher from Nakonde, has been committed to the High Court for trial.

The Nakonde Magistrate Court committed the case on Monday, July 28, 2025, when the case came up for mention before Magistrate Faith Mkandawire.

During the mention, the state prosecutors informed the court that they had received instructions from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to proceed with the case in the High Court.

The case would now be taken to the High Court in Chinsali for trial.

The offense he is charged with falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

The incident that led to Kaputa’s death occurred on April 24, 2025, when he was allegedly beaten.

Following the alleged beating, Kaputa was taken to Nakonde Urban Clinic for initial treatment and later referred to Nakonde District Hospital due to the severity of his condition.

After a few days at Nakonde District Hospital, he was further referred to Chinsali General Hospital for specialized treatment.

Unfortunately, his condition continued to deteriorate, and he was subsequently referred to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) in Lusaka.

Sadly, Kaputa passed away at UTH on May 10, 2025 a day before his birthday day.

Mweemba is charged for allegedly causing his death unlawfully contrary to Section 199 of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

He will now face trial in the High Court in Chinsali, where he will take a plea, and the court will determine his guilt or innocence.

The Legal Aid Board Nakonde office is representing him.

Mweemba is currently on bail and will remain so until required by the High Court.
