Police in Ndola have arrested a 23-year-old taxi driver, Gregory Zulu, of Pamodzi Compound, for allegedly assaulting a police officer during a routine traffic operation.
According to a police statement issued on April 8, 2026, the incident occurred a day earlier on April 7, 2026, around 13:00 hours, along Kalewa Road in Ndola.
Police Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi stated that Sergeant Charles Mandefu, together with other traffic officers, was conducting routine patrols when they found a Honda Fit, registration number BBE 3944, parked in the middle of the road and obstructing traffic.
The officers approached the vehicle and found the driver with a female passenger on board. The driver was charged with obstruction of the roadway, an impoundable offence under Section 188 of the Roads and Road Traffic Act No. 11 of 2002.
Sergeant Mandefu reportedly boarded the vehicle and instructed the driver to drive to the police station.
However, the passenger requested to be dropped off first at Kawama Township, a request which the officer allowed.
After dropping off the passenger, the driver allegedly refused to proceed to the police station and instead assaulted Sergeant Mandefu.
Police later launched investigations and apprehended the suspect.
The suspect is currently in police custody and is expected to appear in court soon.
The statement was issued by Godfrey Chilabi, Public Relations Officer, Zambia Police Service.
