Democratic Union (DU) President Ackim Antony Njobvu says the President’s address during the Official Opening of the First Session of the Fourteenth National Assembly lacked a roadmap on two critical issues affecting Zambians – political reconciliation and the cost of living.

Njobvu, who attended the ceremonial opening at Parliament Buildings in Lusaka today, said while he appreciates the issues highlighted by President Hakainde Hichilema, there was a worrying silence on the growing tension and toxicity in the political environment.

“While we appreciate the many issues highlighted, we noted with deep concern the omission of one urgent national matter, the tension and toxicity in our political environment. The absence of a clear roadmap for national dialogue and reconciliation remains worrying,” Njobvu said.

He said the silence places the burden on neutral political leaders to continue pushing for genuine dialogue in the interest of Mother Zambia.

The DU leader also said he expected the President to outline specific and practical steps to address the cost of living crisis and cushion citizens from the impact of recently adjusted fuel prices.

“These were absent. Our prayer is that Government will internalize the daily burdens of ordinary Zambians and address them decisively in the forthcoming National Budget,” he said.

Njobvu however said there is still a lot of work to be done to restore hope and economic freedom for the people, and his party remains committed to promoting unity and national development.

President Hichilema today officially opened the First Session of the 14th National Assembly where he outlined Government’s policy direction for the 2026-2027 period.
