President Hakainde Hichilema has extolled the countryโ€™s peaceful political atmosphere in which several by-elections took place yesterday.

Nine by-elections were held on 2 May in different parts of the country, all of which were won by the ruling UPND.

The President observed that Zambians were unable to notice that there were elections taking place in some parts of the country due to the peaceful political environment.

“Very few of you may know that yesterday, there were a number of local government by-elections across seven provinces of our country. This went largely unnoticed due to the peaceful environment in which they were conducted,” President Hichilema said.

Hichilema said despite intense campaigns and lobbying by the ruling party and the opposition, the elections proceeded without any reports of violence.

“This is a stark contrast to past elections, which were often marred by disturbances during our colleagues’ tenure. This exemplifies what democracy is about: harboring diverse political views while maintaining peaceful coexistence,” he stated.

The UPND grabbed the Luangwa Ward seat in Chama, Munwa Ward of Chienge, Kaunga Ward of Luangwa and Kaela Ward of Lupososhi town council.

Others are Chikenge Ward in Kabompo, Malala Ward of Chikankata, Luumbo Ward of Gwembe and Ndanda Ward of Limulunga in Western Province.

Party Secretary General Batuke Imenda describes the victory as signifying the strength of the party against the opposition.

Opposition political parties that participated in the elections were the Socialist Party, Leadership Movement, the Citizens First and the Golden Party of Zambia who all suffered huge defeats at the hands of the ruling party.
