A 16-year-old pupil at Chikupili Secondary School in Luano District, Central Province has died after collapsing.

Police Commanding Officer for Central Division Lemekani Chirwa confirmed the development to freelance journalist Winter Mubanga.

Chirwa stated that the incident was reported at Masansa Police Post under Mkushi Police Station at 17:20 hours.

He explained that the deceased, identified as Mizalia Mulamata, was a Form Two learner residing at Chikupili School Compound.

Police indicated that the report was made by Laston Chitebeta, 60, a retired teacher and guardian of the girl.

Chirwa recounted that earlier that day, Mulamata had attended lessons and returned home at 13:00 hours, where she assisted Chitebeta in preparing lunch.

He mentioned that before eating, she went back to the school to see her aunt, Eunice Chimika, a teacher at the institution.

Chirwa narrated that shortly afterwards, another teacher, Chimise, alerted Chitebeta that something had happened to his niece.

He explained that on arrival, Chitebeta found Mulamata lying unconscious outside a classroom.

Chirwa reported that she was rushed to Chikupili Rural Health Centre, but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

He added that a Brought In Dead (BID) certificate was issued, and her body was transferred to Masansa Mini Hospital pending a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.

Chirwa emphasised that Police have since opened an inquiry file into the matter.

Commissioner Chirwa described the incident as a case of sudden and unnatural death, adding that investigations are underway.
