Zambian music artist Rich Bizzy has spoken out after claiming that his scheduled performances at government-supported events in Serenje and Nkeyema were cancelled because he recently performed at an opposition political rally.
The musician expressed concern over what he described as unequal treatment of artists based on perceived political affiliation, arguing that musicians should be allowed to perform for different audiences without facing professional consequences.
According to Rich Bizzy, music is his profession and primary source of income, providing for both his family and members of his team. He stated that, like many artists, he accepts opportunities to perform at various events and gatherings, regardless of political background, because entertainment is his livelihood.
The artist noted that many musicians continue to perform at political rallies for different political parties without experiencing similar challenges in accessing government-related events. He questioned why some artists appear to face restrictions while others continue to receive opportunities.
Rich Bizzy further emphasized that his music does not promote insults, personal attacks, or divisive messages. Instead, he said his performances focus on entertaining audiences and supporting events he is invited to attend as part of his professional work.
The musician argued that artists should not be punished for exercising their right to perform and earn a living. He maintained that music has the power to unite people and should not become a basis for discrimination or exclusion from professional opportunities.
He also called for fairness, tolerance, and equal treatment of all musicians, stating that opportunities should be determined by talent, professionalism, and conduct rather than political associations.
Rich Bizzy’s comments have sparked debate on social media, with many users discussing the relationship between politics and the entertainment industry in Zambia. Some have supported his call for equal opportunities for artists, while others have shared differing views on the role musicians play during political campaigns.
The development comes as political activity continues to intensify ahead of upcoming electoral processes, with artists increasingly finding themselves at the centre of conversations surrounding political participation, freedom of expression, and professional independence.
Rich Bizzy remains one of Zambia’s most popular musicians and has built a strong following through a catalogue of hit songs that have earned him recognition across the country. His latest remarks have once again placed him in the spotlight as discussions continue over whether artists should face professional consequences for performing at political events.
