Attempts of wanting to suppress divergent views on national matters by some UPND leaders will not help this government in an way whatsoever,
Southern African Center for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD) has observed.

Reacting on persistent complaints of alleged suppression of the opposition in the country, SACCORD Acting Executive Director, Arthur Muyunda said freedom of expression and rule of law is crucial to maintaining peace.

He said the ruling party should tolerate people who are offering checks and balances for the good of the country.

Muyunda said in an interview that failure tolerate divergent views can impact the overall stability of peace.

“This shall not help government in anyway and it is a draw back to our democracy,” Muyunda said.

And Muyunda also emphasized the need to revisit the Public Order Act (P.O.A) and how it is being applied by law enforcement agencies.

He said any potential threats to Zambia’s peace should be delt with the vigilance it deserves by government, civil society organizations as well as the general citizenry.

Meanwhile, Muyunda said the government’s ability to address economic challenges will play a significant role in maintaining the country’s stability.

“We feel economic instability, unemployment and poverty can contribute to social unrests and security concerns in the country,” he added.
