South Korean ‘Saemaul Undong’ president, Mr Kwak Dae Hoon, is in Zambia for a series of engagements centred on community development.

The Saemaul Undong project currently being implemented in Mwachiyaba and Shakulya villages in Kafue District, and Nanduba and Nansenga villages in Chikankata District aims to foster community development through self-help, mindset change and coporation through community mobilization.

Mr Hoon has since met with Minister of Community Development and Social Services, Ms.Doreen Mwamba to discuss the project being implemented by the Ministry in the four villages, and to strengthen working strategies for the sake of enhancing human development.

Speaking when she recieved Mr Hoon at her office today, Ms. Mwamba said government is eager to implement the project and ensure that it’s philosophy and strategies are put into perspective, in line with government’s developmental aspirations.

She said Saemaul Undong projects which recently recieved over $70,000, annual funding, has come as a big relief to communities because of its power to transform and empower people, as pledged to fully and effectively monitor its implementation.

“On behalf of our Republican President Mr Hakainde Hichilema, we fully welcome this milestone project and Zambia will never be the same again”, Ms.Mwamba said, and thanked the project president for considering Zambia to be part of such an important programme.

She said Saemaul Undong project,coupled with government’s social security agenda, is a perfect march towards the attaininment of food security at community, national and household levels.

She further emphasized that Zambia is therefore ready to integrate the principles of the project into community development efforts, in ensuring that the majority can have access to basic human needs through a mindset change.

And Mr Hoon, who is expected to inspect the implementation of the project in Kafue and Chikankata, appreciated government, through the Ministry, for the robust efforts they have put in place to improve the lives of people, especially the vulnerable.

He acknowledged the importance of social security, and applauded the Zambian Government for empowering villages through various social protection programmes in an effort to end poverty.

And Mr Hoon encouraged for strict monitoring of the project in order for it to succeed, and have the expected impact on communities.
