United Party for National Development (UPND) Serenje Constituency MP Bishop Friday Katombi (PhD) says he is taking steps to ensure that the Local Content Act, which came into effect on 1 January 2026, starts benefiting the people of Serenje.
In a media statement today, Dr Katombi thanked President Hakainde Hichilema for his visionary leadership, saying the Act will compel mining companies in Serenje and beyond to prioritise local suppliers.
He noted that manganese mining firms in the district will now have to source goods and services from Zambian-owned businesses.
Dr Katombi advanced that local entrepreneurs in transport, catering and equipment maintenance will gain a reliable market.
He said that the reservation of twenty per cent of procurement spending for local firms will boost Serenje’s economy.

Dr Katombi affirmed that mandatory supplier development programmes will equip local businesses with technical and financial skills.
He emphasised that the creation of a local supply chain will generate jobs for young people in the constituency.
Dr Katombi stated that the Act will help diversify Serenje’s economy beyond agriculture and artisanal mining.
He observed that increased mining investment will expand the tax base and support the formalisation of informal businesses.
Dr Katombi said the law will ensure the district’s mineral wealth benefits residents directly.
He added that his office will monitor compliance to ensure mining companies honour their local content obligations.
Dr Katombi reiterated that the Act represents a turning point for Serenje’s economic empowerment and long-term development.
