The Southern African Center for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD) has described as “treasonous” some statements by certain well known politicians suggesting that the United Party for National Development (UPND) Government would be removed from power before 2026.

SACCORD Acting Executive Director, Arthur Muyunda said in an interview that for anyone to suggest that President Hakainde Hichilema’s Government can be removed from office before 2026, when the country goes for elections, is nothing but political rhetoric.

Muyunda said Zambia has historically been a peaceful country as seen by smooth transitions of power in previous elections, adding that those wishing to rule should wait for 2026.

He said it was unfortunate that some politicians had resulted to issuing statements that border on anarchy, further describing such individuals as anarchists.

“Statements by some politicians suggesting that the UPND Government can be removed from power before 2026, are highly speculative and can even be seen as treasonous by some people,” Muyunda said.

Muyunda said political leaders should desist from issuing such statements just to gain political mileage, further describing the act as unfortunate.

“Zambia is guided by the constitution and any attempts to remove a Government before completion of it’s tenure of office requires a legal and constitutional process,” Muyunda said.

Meanwhile, Muyunda also said the current administration needed to understand that public perception plays a critical role in governance, stating that if citizens express disatisfaction with the current Government, it can impact a lot of political dynamics.

“The UPND Government’s performance on policies and public needs will influence how Zambians will react in 2026,” Muyunda added.
