Social media users are suddenly travelling back in time — and they are doing it without leaving their phones.
The latest viral trend has people transforming ordinary modern selfies into stunning images that look as though they were taken in the 1980s, complete with vintage hairstyles, colourful outfits, retro sunglasses, old-school studio backdrops and the grainy appearance of analogue film.
The trend, widely being referred to as the “80s AI photo trend” or “ChatGPT 80s photo trend,” has rapidly spread across platforms including Instagram and X, with celebrities and public figures also joining the nostalgia wave.
But what is the secret behind the pictures?
Artificial intelligence.
Unlike an ordinary Instagram filter, these images are generally created using AI image-generation tools that can take an existing photograph and reinterpret it according to a detailed instruction or prompt.
A user can upload a clear selfie and ask an AI image generator to recreate the person as though the photograph had been taken during the 1980s.
The AI can then alter elements such as clothing, hairstyle, accessories, lighting, background, pose, colours and image texture while attempting to retain the person’s recognisable facial features.
That is what makes the trend so fascinating.
Someone who took a selfie in 2026 can suddenly appear to have stepped out of an old family photograph from 1985.
The most convincing versions include details associated with 1980s photography, including voluminous hairstyles, bold clothing, oversized accessories, denim, colourful backgrounds, warm lighting, faded colours, soft focus and visible film grain.
Some users are choosing to look like they were photographed in an old family studio.

Others are recreating the appearance of vintage wedding photographs, old-school fashion shoots, family albums and classic movie publicity pictures.
The trend has also attracted celebrities and politicians.
Indian public figures including Piyush Goyal, Kiren Rijiju and Himanta Biswa Sarma have shared AI-generated retro images, while actor couples and other celebrities have joined the trend on Instagram.
Interestingly, not everyone participating is using AI.
Indian politician Shashi Tharoor joined the conversation by sharing actual photographs from the 1980s rather than creating an artificial version of himself.
That difference highlights what is driving the trend in the first place: nostalgia.
For people who lived through the 1980s, the images can bring back memories of the fashion, music, cars, hairstyles, family photography and popular culture of the period.
For younger people who were not alive during the decade, the trend offers an opportunity to imagine what they — or their parents — might have looked like during that era.
It also demonstrates how AI is changing the way people interact with their own photographs.
In the past, recreating a convincing period photograph would have required professional photography, costumes, makeup, a suitable location and extensive editing.
Today, much of the transformation can begin with a single photograph and a well-written prompt.
The quality of the result, however, depends heavily on the image supplied and the instructions given to the AI.
A vague request such as “make me look like I’m from the 80s” may produce a generic result.
A more detailed prompt can specify the decade, clothing, hairstyle, camera style, lighting, background, colour palette, film texture and type of photograph desired.
That is why people are experimenting with multiple versions of the same photograph.
One person may create an 80s wedding portrait, another an old-school family photograph, while someone else may recreate the appearance of a vintage African music or fashion shoot.
The trend is also another example of how quickly AI-powered visual creativity can move from technology circles into mainstream social media.
Just months or years ago, AI-generated images often attracted attention because they looked strange or futuristic.
Now, one of their biggest attractions is the opposite: making the present look like the past.
And for many social media users, that is exactly what makes the “Back to the 80s” trend so addictive.
It is not simply about creating an old-looking photograph.
It is about answering a question that many people have probably asked themselves at some point:
“What would I have looked like in the 80s?”
Now, AI can give you an answer.
