TOMATO THIEF SENTENCED FOR THEFT AND ESCAPE IN MAZABUKA

The Mazabuka Magistrate Court has delivered a verdict in the case of Lano Mooya, a 25-year-old resident of Lubombo, sentencing him to concurrent terms of 6 and 9 months for theft and escaping lawful custody, respectively.

According to Byta FM Zambia Court Beat Journalist, Mooya was implicated in the theft of 8 kilograms of tomatoes, with an estimated value of K450.

On May 4th, 2024, he was caught red-handed at approximately 17:00 hours harvesting tomatoes from Harison Kabesha’s garden.

Kabesha, with assistance from others, successfully detained Mooya and transported him to the Lubombo Police post.

However, on the same day, Mooya managed to flee custody between 22:00 and 00:00 hours by breaking through a wall, which led to a subsequent manhunt and his eventual recapture.

Upon pleading guilty to both charges, Magistrate Boyd Nyambe imposed the aforementioned sentences to be served simultaneously.
