‎Confusion erupted yesterday at a Voter Registration Centre at Mbita Market in Livingstone, resulting in two people being shot and injured.
‎
‎According to reports, the confusion began when a youth from Ngwenya Township was allegedly being harassed by a Police Reserve officer identified as Chama at Mbita Police Station.
‎
The situation escalated when UPND cadres, led by Chondos from Ngwenya, intervened and confronted the officer, prompting him to call for reinforcement from Livingstone Central Police Station.
‎
‎Upon the arrival of additional police officers, a warning shot was fired into the air in an attempt to disperse the resisting crowd.
‎
However, the situation worsened when another shot was fired towards the ground, with the bullet ricocheting and striking both Chondos and Chama in their legs, leaving them injured.
‎
‎In protest, angry residents and UPND cadres regrouped and surrounded Mbita Police Station, threatening to burn it.
‎
Calm was eventually restored after party leadership intervened and persuaded the crowd to disperse.
‎
‎UPND Livingstone District Youth Chairperson for Politics and Security, Philip Musela, has condemned the shooting and interference with the voter registration process.
‎
Mr. Musela stressed that the police are mandated to protect citizens and called on higher authorities to ensure the involved officer is apprehended and prosecuted accordingly.
‎
‎He has further described Livingstone as a peaceful town and states that any officer who endangers public safety is unfit for duty.
